New Code of Practice for Netting Around Piers Introduced by Southern IFCA

Today (Wednesday 2nd June 2021) Southern IFCA has announced the introduction of a new Code of Practice for net fishing around nine piers within the district after concerns were raised by the recreational sea angling community on the impact of netting in close proximity to the affect piers on sea angling. The newly introduced Net Fishing Around Piers Code of Practice will prevent the use of fishing nets within 200m of the affected piers, but will exclude landing and drop nets.

Southern IFCA have introduced this new code of practice for netting around piers in light of concerns raised by the recreational sea angling community on the impact of netting in close proximity to the affected piers:
  • Sandown Pier, Sandown, Isle of Wight
  • Ryde Pier Head, Ryde, Isle of Wight
  • South Parade Pier, Portsmouth, Hampshire
  • Yarmouth Pier, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight
  • Boscombe Pier, Bournemouth, Dorset
  • Bournemouth Pier, Bournemouth, Dorset
  • Swanage Pier, Swanage, Dorset
  • Weymouth Stone Pier, Weymouth, Dorset
  • Weymouth Pleasure Pier, Weymouth, Dorset

Recreational sea angling is a highly popular activity within the Southern IFCA District. The recreational sea angling community has raised concerns over potential conflicts and negative impacts on recreational sea angling activity as a result of fishing nets being used closely to the affected pier structures, which provide key access for recreational sea angling participants within the region. The new Code of Practice for Netting Around Piers aims to address these concerns.

SIFCA Chief Officer Ian Jones said “The Recreational Angling Sector Group (RASG) with Angling Trust members worked in conjunction with the South Coasts Fisherman’s Council in the development of the code and through our netting review. This ensured that recreational sea angling was represented regarding land and drop nets, and the introduced code of practice reflects this”.

The Code of Practice will be reviewed no later than 31st December 2022 with the consideration of new regulatory measures should the Code of Practice prove to be ineffective.
