Would you like to make fishing part of your future career?
Would you like to help others to discover this amazing sport and benefit from the positives that come from spending time next to water?
Do you want to introduce people from all walks of life to fishing through fun, engaging angling sessions?

You can register to become a Licensed Angling Coach and complete the Angling Trust Coach Qualification as part of your licensing journey.

The Angling Trust Coach Qualification is recognised by Sport England, insurance companies and local authorities as the industry standard for delivering introductory, coached and guided fishing sessions in England.

The course does not teach you how to catch fish. Instead, it provides the skills and knowledge needed to pass your expertise on to others in a safe, secure and structured way.

Once you have completed the qualification and all other Coach Licence requirements, you can deliver our NGB development programmes, including the CAST Awards, Get Fishing Awards and Reel Education. You will also be able to promote and manage your events through our dedicated Event Marketplace.

Angling clubs, coaching organisations and fisheries use the Angling Trust Coach Qualification and annual Coach Licence to support the safe delivery of fun, engaging and informative sessions across sea, coarse and game fishing. Licensed coaches also benefit from comprehensive coach insurance and access to our dedicated Angling Trust Safeguarding Officer.

What programmes can you deliver as a licensed coach?

Once licensed, you can either deliver your own angling programme or adopt one of the Angling Trust projects and use that to enhance your coaching. Our coaching programmes are flexible and can suit many styles of angling including sea, game and coarse. Please use the grid below to find the perfect programme to aid your delivery.

CAST AWARDS

The Angling Trust's 3-stage certificated programme. Progress learners through their Level 1, 2 and 3 CAST Awards and provide them with the skills and confidence to make angling a part of their future.

GET FISHING

This project encourages entry into angling through free and low cost sessions. The Get Fishing Awards are the perfect ‘first steps’ into angling.

REEL EDUCATION

A project which employs coaches to go into primary schools and engage with the next generation of anglers through a bespoke in-school delivery model.

WELLBEING

Use your coaching skills to help improve mental health and wellbeing by encouraging people to get outside and experience the therapeutic atmosphere of the bankside. Get Fishing For Wellbeing is a national campaign to help promote the positive benefits of angling. Coaches often use the CAST Awards to evidence the technical learning.

DESIGN OWN DELIVERY

As a licensed coach you are free to go and design your own programmes and coaching sessions. Angling is such a diverse sport and there is so much opportunity available to licensed Angling Trust coaches.

Become a Licensed Angling Coach

The Angling Trust Coach Licence is an annual licence to practise for coaches who have completed all required training and compliance checks. The video below explains how to register and complete the licensing process.

When you register, your coaching status will initially show as Action Required while you complete the necessary actions. At this stage, you are not yet a fully licensed coach.

To become fully licensed, you must:

Complete the Angling Coach Qualification
Hold an appropriate Enhanced DBS check
Complete the required first aid training
Pay the annual Coach Licence fee of £20
Be an individual member of the Angling Trust, costing £33 per year when paid by auto-renewal
Agree to the Angling Trust Code of Conduct and Coaching Minimum Operating Standards

Once all requirements have been completed and approved, your status will change to Current and you will become a fully Licensed Angling Coach.

Licensed coaches are fully endorsed by the Angling Trust, the National Governing Body for angling in England, and will be listed on our website as trained and compliant. This gives confidence to members of the public and organisations using their services.

Licensed coaches are also covered by the Angling Trust insurance policy and can deliver our NGB development programmes and advertise their services to the public through the Event Marketplace.

Coaching Standards

The Angling Trust, as the National Governing Body for angling in England, outlines the following minimum operating standards for all introduction, coach and guiding sessions. Any participation event we endorse, or any event being delivered by one of our licensed coaches, must follow these standards:

These documents can also be accessed via the Coaching Standards tab on the Angling Trust’s Safeguarding page. The standards have been produced after consultation with insurance providers and Sport England to make sure that angling tuition and coaching are provided safely, appropriately and in line with current safeguarding practices by licensed DBS checked angling coaches.
