7 reasons why fishing is good for your health

This May saw the annual Mental Health Awareness Week which is always a timely reminder of maintaining a healthy mind as well as a healthy body. One way of doing so is getting outside with a rod or pole and going fishing. We take a look at seven ways that fishing is good for both your physical and mental health.

Free the Mind
Being outside in nature has been shown to improve your mental health compared to indoor or stressful busy city environments. Reduced anxiety and a calming effect mean that your mind is in a much better place. Paired with the fact that being by water generally makes us calmer and you have a perfect excuse to go fishing.

Stay Fit
Fishing is an activity that gets the whole body moving. Walking down to your swim or wading up the river currents keeps the body moving and blood flowing. Exercise and physical activity has both an immediate and a long-term effect on your health, as well as reducing the risk of disease.

Vitamin D
Time outside in the sunshine, or even a typical overcast British day, is enough to allow the body to top up on Vitamin D. The body requires Vitamin D to help absorb calcium and phosphate from out diet which boosts your immune system and is also important for teeth and bone health.

Relaxation and Stress Reduction
Spending time outside and at one with nature relaxes both the body and mind. Being able to step away from the often busy and stressful Monday to Friday lifestyle that can become all encompassing is needed for a healthy mind, with many people still neglecting the importance of mental health compared to physical health.

Improves Relationships
Spending time by the bank or wading up river with friends or family members is a great way to rekindle friendships and relationships, and reconnect over a shared hobby or passion.

Improve Patience
Time spent fishing has been proven to improve your patience as well as concentration levels. It’s not often that you cast a line and get a bite straight away, so fishing puts your patience to the test, and builds persistence and concentration levels to catch that fish.

Stimulates the Brain
Fishing can be a complex and testing activity, needing skill and understanding of how the waters work and how to catch various types of fish. Therefore every time you pack your fishing tackle and cast a line onto the water you put your brain to work which strengthens your mind and elevates your mood.
